Why you keep getting WEBP files
Many websites now send pictures as WEBP to any browser that can show them, because the files are smaller and pages load faster. When you save one of those pictures, you save what the site sent, not a JPG or PNG.
Think of it like a note written in shorthand. Your browser reads shorthand perfectly well. A lot of other programs, and plenty of upload forms, still do not. Converting writes the same picture out in full.
The PNG will be much bigger, and that is expected
This surprises people, so here is a real measurement rather than a guess. I took a 600 pixel photograph, saved it as WEBP with this tool (66 KB), and converted that WEBP to PNG. The PNG came out at 422 KB, 6.4 times bigger, and it looks exactly the same.
That is because PNG never throws detail away, so it has to store every pixel in full. It also cannot bring back detail the WEBP already threw away. Converting to PNG makes a picture easier to open, not sharper.
So choose by what the picture is:
- A photograph: choose JPG in the Convert to box. The same photo as a JPG was 70 KB, barely bigger than the WEBP. There is a page for exactly that: WEBP to JPG.
- A logo, an icon, a screenshot or anything see-through: keep PNG. It keeps sharp edges sharp and see-through parts see-through, and the size increase is much smaller on pictures like these.
See-through parts stay see-through
A WEBP logo with no background comes out as a PNG with no background. Nothing gets filled in. That is the main reason to choose PNG over JPG for this kind of picture, because a JPG cannot be see-through at all.
Note: if you switch the box to JPG for a see-through picture, the tool lays it on white first, and you can pick another colour. The plain way of doing this in a browser fills those parts with black, which I checked in Chrome before building this.
Moving WEBP pictures
WEBP can be animated, like a GIF. A PNG cannot move, so an animated WEBP becomes a still PNG of its first frame, and the list tells you when a file is animated. If you need the animation, this is not the tool for it.
How to check nothing is uploaded
Many online converters upload your picture to their server first. This one cannot, because the converting is done by your own browser. Load this page, switch your wifi off, and convert anyway. It still works.
Where this stops, honestly
- It does not improve quality. A blurry WEBP becomes a blurry PNG.
- Hidden photo details are not copied. Things like the camera model and GPS location are left behind. Usually that is what you want, but keep it in mind if you rely on them.
- Very bright, wide colour photos from some newer phones are brought into normal screen colours, which can look a touch less vivid.
- Huge pictures use a lot of memory. A few very large files at once may be slow on an old phone.
