The four ways to split
Every page as its own PDF. A 20 page file becomes 20 files, numbered so they sort in page order.
Every few pages. Type how many pages each file should hold. Every 2 pages turns a stack of scanned two page forms back into one file per form, which is what this option is for most of the time.
My own ranges, one PDF each. Type something like 1-3, 4-10, 11 and you get three files: pages 1 to 3, pages 4 to 10, and page 11 on its own.
Only the pages I pick, as one PDF. Type 2, 5-7 and you get a single file with pages 2, 5, 6 and 7. If you only need to send part of a long document, I recommend this one, because the other person gets one tidy file instead of several.
How to write the page ranges
Separate parts with commas. A single number is one page, and two numbers with a dash are everything between them, so 3-6 means pages 3, 4, 5 and 6. Leave a side of the dash empty to mean the start or the end: 8- is page 8 to the last page, and -3 is the first three.
If a range asks for a page the file does not have, or runs backwards like 9-4, the tool says so and waits for you to fix it. It never quietly leaves a page out, because nobody counts the pages in a split file until the missing one matters.
What comes across, and what does not
Each page is copied into the new file as it is, with the text, the fonts and the pictures it uses. Nothing is turned into an image, so text stays sharp and selectable, and quality does not change at all.
Two things belong to the whole document rather than to any page, so they do not come across: the bookmarks panel, and fillable form fields. The pages themselves look exactly the same. Keep in mind that a form you still need to fill in is best filled first and split afterwards.
Think of it as taking pages out of a ring binder. Each page leaves with everything printed on it, and the index tabs at the front stay with the binder.
Why the new files can add up to more than the original
A PDF stores a font or a logo once and lets every page use it. When the pages go into separate files, each file needs its own copy, so twenty single pages can weigh more than the one file they came from.
That is the format, not a fault. If a single file is too big to send, our PDF compressor makes it smaller, in the browser as well.
When it will not open your file
This will not work on a PDF that asks for a password when it opens, because the pages cannot be read without it. Our guide on removing a password from a PDF shows how to save an unlocked copy when you know the password, and that copy splits normally.
Scanned PDFs work fine, because each page is simply a picture of the paper. Files over 100 MB are refused, since everything happens in your own browser.
